I keep reading on social media that the Giants are hot.

Here are their records over the last three months:

Sep/Oct: 15-15
August:  11-16
July:       11-13

Man, they’re on fire!

Here’s Madison Bumgarner’s ERA in those three months:

Sep:  3.92
Aug: 4.14
July: 1.75

I don’t think they’re “hot”, nor do I think they are in possession of “momentum”.  I don’t even like to say they “know how to win” despite rings for what seems like the last decade of even-numbered years.

If “knowing how to win” was a thing, why’d they go 84-78 last year?  Heck, why wouldn’t such a team–armed with that knowledge–go 162-0?

They’re not hot.

They are good.

In Cole Hamels last two regular season starts:
14 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB, 13 K

Despite this, he was shellacked yesterday.  And in the start prior to the two above, he gave up 6 ER in 6 IP, 2 HR, 3 BB.

But, momentum.

Conor Gillaspie struck out in the 3rd and 6th innings last night.

How much proof do we need to stop buying into this stuff?

If you’re sitting on 17 at the blackjack table,  “Should I hit or stay?” isn’t answered by asking how the last three hands went.

I wish this hot thing would lose its momentum.
